ECTS at a glance

ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is a European system within the framework of the Erasmus program for the transfer and accumulation of study credits and grades. It is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a program of study. These objectives should preferably be specified in terms of learning outcomes and competences to be acquired. ECTS was developed by the Commission of the European Communities in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition throughout the European Community. It provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements, and transferring them from one institution to another. Its main aim is to facilitate the recognition of study periods undertaken abroad by mobile students through the transfer of credits.

Benefits of ECTS

A large number of countries have adopted ECTS by law as an accumulation system for their own higher education systems and others are in the process of doing so. ECTS makes study programs easy to read and compare. It aims to facilitate planning, delivery, evaluation, recognition and validation of qualifications and units of learning as well as student mobility. ECTS can be used for all types of programs (whatever their mode of delivery) is widely used in formal higher education and can be applied to other lifelong learning activities. It serves both mobile and non-mobile students: it can be used for accumulation within an institution and provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements, and transferring them from one institution to another. The ECTS system increases the competiveness and attractiveness of European higher education, as compared to other continents, and facilitates student mobility and the comparison of the curricula of different higher education institutions.

How does ECTS work?

ECTS is a decentralized system based upon the principle of mutual trust and confidence between higher education institutions. The few rules of ECTS, concerning Information (on courses available), Agreement (between the home and host institutions) and the Use of Credit Points (to indicate student workload) are set out to reinforce this mutual trust and confidence (further information about ECTS could be found on the website of the European Commission). ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits measure the workload of a full-time student during one academic year. The student workload of a full-time study program in Europe amounts in most cases to around 1500-1800 hours per academic year and in those cases one credit stands for around 25 to 30 working hours. Subsequently, 30 credits correspond to a study semester and 20 credits to a study trimester. Credits are allocated to all educational components of a study program (such as modules, courses, placements, dissertation work, etc.) and reflect the quantity of work each component requires to achieve its specific objectives or learning outcomes in relation to the total quantity of work necessary to complete a full year of study successfully.

ECTS in ATEITH for incoming students

ATEITH has officially applied the ECTS to all its courses. The courses are described not only in terms of content but also have credits added to each course (details can be found in the syllabus of each course unit). Student workload in full-time study is 1500 hours per academic year, corresponding to 60 ECTS credits. If the annual hours are allocated to 38 weeks, the workload of each week is 40 hours. Respectively, the total workload of a semester is 750 hours of student work (30 ECTS credits). One ECTS credit is equivalent to about 25 hours of student work that can consist of lectures, labs, tutorials, online learning, group work, self study, preparation for exams, exams, as well as self study. Credits in ECTS can only be obtained after successful completion of the work required and appropriate assessment of the learning outcomes achieved. Learning outcomes are sets of competences, expressing what the student will know, understand or be able to do after completion of a process of learning, long or short. ECTS in ATEITH for outgoing students

ATEITH has a comprehensive and rigorous policy in place for the allocation of credits to the different course units followed by ATEITH students abroad. ATEITH provides full recognition of studies or placements abroad to all outgoing students according to the ECTS regulations. It undertakes a flexible approach about the recognition of credits obtained abroad on the basis of fair recognition, rather than perfect or absolute equivalence (since the credits and learning outcomes of a course unit in different Institutions cannot be identical). Credit transfer is facilitated by the use of the ECTS Key Documents (Course Catalogue, Student Application Form, Learning/Training Agreement and Transcript of Records) as well as the Diploma Supplement.

Before the commencement of the student mobility, ATEITH, the host Institution and the student sign a Learning Agreement in which the study program abroad is agreed upon. ATEITH guarantees full academic recognition for all only the courses listed in the Learning Agreement between host/home institutions. After the outgoing student receives his/her Transcript of Records from the host Institution, needs to meet with the corresponding Departmental Erasmus Coordinator of ATEITH. The Coordinator will check if the student completed the semester abroad and gained the required minimum number of ECTS as well as compare the course units on the Transcript of Records with those on the signed Learning Agreement. All the course units from the Transcript of Records (or the placement) that were successfully completed and were originally presented in the Learning Agreement (Training Agreement) are fully recognized and included as an integral part of the student’s curriculum. Those course units (placement) are also included in the student’s Diploma Supplement that provides a standardized description of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies that a student completes during his/her academic career.
